Mental health is defined as: A state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.
There is, however, a difference between mental health and mental illness. Mental health is your general wellbeing, it needs to be looked after in the same way that your physical health needs to be.
Mental illness is something that disrupts your mental state. It interrupts how you think, feel, act and communicate.
We all have bad days. We can all struggle with maintaining positive mental health, this does not mean that we are all mentally ill. People with mental ill health often needs more support, maybe a diagnosis and sometimes medication.
